BANGKOK - Thailand's new government has revived debate over a bill that would make the country the first in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex unions but which has split the LGBT community for falling short of proposing full equal rights. The cabinet of the then-ruling military government endorsed the bill in December, before the proposal stalled ahead of elections in March that returned the top junta leaders to power. The Justice Ministry's Rights and Liberties Protection Division has just wrapped up a series of public forums to hear feedback on the Life Partnership Bill before the new government presses ahead. Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said at a forum in Bangkok last week that the bill's fate would be "decided by public sentiment," according to local media.

Taiwan approves same-sex marriage in a first for Asia
Taiwanese leaders have long tried to stand out from their political rival China so the rest of the world would not confuse the two ethnically Chinese societies. Almost 20 years ago, to bolster its democracy and tolerance for social activism — both weak in China — Taiwan encouraged LGBTQ rights groups to form. Former President Chen Shui-bian was one of their chief backers. Galvanized by that history, Taiwan on Friday became the first place in Asia is to let same-sex couples marry with most of the same civil code benefits that heterosexual couples get. Taiwan follows 27 countries worldwide, from Argentina to the Netherlands, that have legalized same-sex marriage.
Taiwan has legalised same-sex marriage, the first of any Asian state, with the passage of legislation giving gay couples the right to marry. Thousands of gay rights supporters gathered in heavy rain outside parliament in the capital, Taipei, to watch a live broadcast of the proceedings. Now the law says everyone should be treated equally no matter who you are, who you love. Judges had given the government until next Friday to pass legislation.
